چکیده

This paper develops a framework for statistically guaranteeing end-to-end delay bounds to envelopeconstrained connections transporting real-time traffic in a network of switches employing the Earliest Deadline First (EDF) packet scheduling scheme in conjunction with per-hop traffic shaping. The performance of an isolated EDF scheduler fed by markovian sources has been studied earlier in the literature; we extend the analysis to the multi-node setting in the presence of per-node traffic shaping. By making conservative approximations, we show that the analysis is tractable, and offers large performance gains over frameworks which offer deterministic services (the difference is as large as 25% for reasonably realistic traffic mixes). We also investigate the advantages of smoothing the traffic at the ingress to the network. Our framework, we believe, could be of great use in networks which statistically guarantee end-to-end delay bounds to real-time applications.

Providing End-to-End Statistical Delay Guarantees with Earliest Deadline First Scheduling and Per-Hop Traffic Shaping

This paper develops a framework for statistically guaranteeing end-to-end delay bounds to leaky-bucket-constrained flows transporting real-time traffic in a network of switches using Earliest Deadline First (EDF) packet scheduling and per-hop traffic shaping. We first analyze the delay-bound violation probabilities at an isolated EDF scheduler fed by fluid source processes generating extremal d...

End-to-End Statistical Delay Service under GPS and EDF Scheduling: A Comparison Study

Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) has gained much popularity in recent years as a simple and effective scheduling mechanism for the provisioning of Quality of Service (QoS) in emerging high-speed networks. For supporting deterministic end-to-end delay guarantees, GPS is known to be sub-optimal in comparison to the Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling discipline; nevertheless it is often p...

Achieving End-to-end Delay Bounds by EDF Scheduling without Traffic Shaping

Earliest Deadline First scheduling with per-node traffic shaping (RC-EDF) has the largest schedulable region among all practical policies known today and has been considered a good solution for providing end-to-end packet delay bounds. In order to harness the traffic burstiness inside a network to satisfy the schedulability condition of EDF, pernode traffic shaping has been believed to be neces...

Traffic Shaping for End-to-End Delay Guarantees with EDF Scheduling

Abstract— The provision of Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of end-to-end delay guarantees to real-time applications is an important issue in emerging broadband packet networks. Of the various packet scheduling schemes that have been proposed in the literature, Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling in conjunction with per-hop traffic shaping (jointly referred to as Rate-Controlled EDF or RC...

Deterministic end-to-end delay guarantees with rate controlled EDF scheduling

Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of end-to-end delay guarantees to real-time applications is an important issue in emerging broadband packet networks. Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling, in conjunction with per-hop traffic shaping (jointly called Rate Controlled EDF or RC-EDF) has been recognised as an effective means of end-to-end deterministic delay provisioning. This paper addresses t...
